Compared to the rest of New York City, the residents of Central and East Harlem have:
  • more than twice the likelihood of dying from AIDS
  • higher rates of hospitalization for heart disease and higher rates of diabetes
  • higher rates of asthma, alcohol and substance abuse
  • higher rates of death due to cancer

More than 6 in 10 adults in Central and East Harlem are overweight or obese, as are 4 in 10 public elementary school students and 1 in 3 public high school students.

The Central Harlem Health Revival was created by the Borough of Manhattan Ecumenical Advisory Group to:
  • Motivate Central Harlem residents to adopt healthier lifestyles
  • Provide tools and information to empower community residents to advocate for themselves and to learn more
ways to take better care of their health
  • Raise awareness of the need to focus more health resources and interventions for the Central Harlem community
  • Bring the holistic message of body, mind, and spirit into practice

See About Us for more information on CHHR and the Advisory Group.

We have started planning for the 2009 week-long health revival.

In order for the Health Revival to be a success, we need the participation of all of Harlem. If you are
interested, please sign up for a committee to help plan and implement the programs.
